Mary Connolly: I am a senior at Michigan State University majoring in Nutritional Science and Global and Area Studies. I am particularly interested in gender related health disparities and hope to go on to receive my masters in public health. I hope to empower women and children through an understanding of how their own bodies work so they may have agency in their own medical care.

Jemma Flood: I am also a senior at Michigan State University, obtaining a double degree in Physiology and Spanish.  I hope to be able to practice medicine in areas that need Spanish-speaking doctors as well as participate in medical outreach programs abroad in high need areas of Latin America.  I am interested in studying the history behind barriers to women in medicine, and comparing those to of some of the challenges women still face in the medical profession.  As a prospective female medical student, these findings hold a special importance when considering the opportunities for my future career.  I hope to be able to use what I have found in research to bring about better accessibility for all people wishing to pursue a medical education.

Vineetha Rangarajan: I am a senior at Michigan State University majoring in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics. I am really interested in the role of women in medicine because I myself am starting medical school this summer. I hope that after completing my research for this blog, I will gain a deeper historical understanding of how women have shaped medicine. In addition, by researching about the role of midwives in not only the US, but other parts of the world, I hope to bring new and diverse perspectives to the discourse of midwifery.
